Home Office "Finished"

No space I dwell within is ever truly "finished", evolution is who I am. Whether changes are different accessories, a rug, or the furniture travelling about the room, evolution is going to occur.   I promise not the ceiling, again. I settled on a beautiful Behr color while waiting at Home Depot for Mr. GDC, "Stucco Tan", sometimes gray, sometimes taupe I am happy with it. For the moment, we have Mr. GDC's Home Office "finished", well - for now.

I settled on a dark taupe and beige heavy cotton fabric, in a leafy damask print for the drapery. Available here  at Fabric Warehouse a little shop I found online. The fabric being heavy drapes well. I made the panels just long enough to kiss the floor. For the rod I used the usual 2" dowel, then chose the dark green paint previously dressing the office ceiling to cover the rod, then finished up the rod design by painting the rings and finials gold for a little contrast.

We found the gorgeous buffet lamps on Craig's List. They are carved wooden lamps with heavy paper shades. They worked out well. I needed something tall to offset the height of the drafting table desk, at 36" tall these lamps were a great fit. The interior of the shades are painted in a soft burnished gold, when the lights are switched on they give an amber glow Mr. GDC likes, easy on the eyes with no glare. He tends to be a bit for fussy than me, he liked the carved candlestick design.  I was drawn to the slender stripes on the shades at top and bottom, they provide a little contemporary edge to a very classically French styled buffet lamp.

The print is from Great Big Canvas, an online store where you can purchase large prints  or canvas prints in several sizes.  I chose a 72 X 41 print to cover most of the back wall behind the desk.  The office is 12" lower than the living room. The drafting desk being tall blocks a lot of the view, add a 36" wide monitor and it creates a design dilemma.  Mr. GDC chose "View of Dresden with Hofkirche at Right 1748", the print is available here .  It works well with the art in the living room. Since both can be viewed from the living room the two pieces needed to compliment one another. The colors and subject matter work well together; water, clouds, similar style houses and both are from Dutch artist.

We built a frame, covered it in heavy linen and I decoupaged the print onto the frame using Mod Podge. I didn't want to puncture the newly applied linen on the walls with screws. A canvas frame is much lighter. We were able to hang the large canvas on two finishing nails, carefully placed in the seams of the linen for very little damage.  Also, I like the way the Mod Podge creates instant patina, it almost looks like old leather, or an old canvas. Painting over a recently purchased pristine print requires a bit of courage. Once the Mod Podge dries over the print you can see the brush strokes giving texture to the print.  Of course I could purchase a printed canvas, but where would the fun be in that?

This is the second time we've done this, the first time was in the living room, you can read about that little fiasco here. It was more comfortable the second time around....

While antiquing in Dallas we happened upon a gorgeous English antique buffet.

We adopted it and brought it home to live behind Mr. GDC's desk. The buffet provides a great deal of storage and looks stylish while doing it. I adore it when form and function come together beautifully.  We understand it to be early 1900's, it has cabriole legs with a carved acanthus leaf detail, burlwood insets, a carved edge and is finished off with graceful bronze pulls and handles that accent like jewelry.

Mr. GDC utilizes the silverware insert for organizing and storing his collections of office supplies.

I prefer not to discuss the horns.....

We anchored the desk with our antique Persian rug. Greatly neutral in color; mostly brown, pale taupe, a sprinkling of dark green and outlines in crisp black. It provides a small bit of pattern and great amount of texture the space.

For additional storage we've added a few basket trunks tucked in here and there. The baskets provide not only storage, but a natural element and texture.

Two drawer lateral filing cabinet neatly stores hanging files.

I set out to create a space that would envelope Mr. GDC with things he liked, things that speak to his him. The space also needed to live well functionally, with plenty of storage for his office toys.  I think work is much more manageable, stress less when you working in a space that makes you feel happy. Finally, the space needed to marry the living room. I wanted it to feel masculine, traditional, English and flow seamlessly from our living room.  We are happy with the final space. There is no doubt there will be some changes, additions and it will evolve as time passes.

For now we are both content. Until next time wishing you all the Best -

    1. Thank you Claire. Its very kind of you to give me feed back on my posts. I appreciate you. This was a little be a challenging space with it open to the living room, I had to make it live well and visually coordinate. Then there are the horns. I am smitten with the Behr "Stucco Tan" and think it will be making a repeat appearance on the first floor bedroom ceiling. It is warm without being too dark or boring, it has just enough gray to make it interesting. Smitten.
